Quarantine Throwback: Giraffes!

This is an article written on July 21, 2020.

Let me tell you some interesting facts about giraffes! Giraffes give birth standing up. So the baby giraffe has to fall 5 feet to the ground. That is a rude way to come into the world. Newborn giraffes are about 6 feet and grow 4 feet in their first year of life. Baby giraffes are really big at birth. They weigh 150 pounds.

Many giraffes die from lion attacks in their first year of life. But when they are adults, they are really tall and can see lions from far away. They are the savanna's early warning system. Other animals use giraffes to spot lions far away.

Giraffes are the world's tallest mammal. Adults can grow to 15-20 feet. The reason they are so tall is so they can eat the leaves of tall trees. One thing giraffes can not do is dance (it was one of favorite books “Giraffes Can’t Dance”).
