Quarantine Throwback: Baking in Space!

An article on a new, fun activity that is out of this world!

One thing nobody has done is bake in space. Astronauts currently eat freeze-dried food. It would be better to eat fresh chocolate chip cookies and pizza.

But there are a lot of problems with baking in space. One problem is the money. It costs $3000 for each kilogram to go up in space. It could cost more than $60,000 to get the oven into space. Each cookie ends up costing 60 dollars. Another problem is that zero gravity is in space. If you put the cookie dough in the oven, it is going to float in the oven. People who make the oven have an idea! Their plan is to put the cookies in plastic bags with little holes so they keep their place. The last problem is that there is no convection in space. Convection heats up the air. Getting all of the air to the same temperature would be hard. The oven designer’s idea is to have a fan in the oven.

This year, they are going to send up the oven. They are going to bake the cookies, but the worst thing is that the astronauts cannot eat the cookies! They are going to send the cookies back to Earth for analysis. This could be a devastating problem for recruiting new astronauts.
